My name is Virginia Knowles. My husband Thad and I have ten children, ages 5 to 24, a son-in-law and a baby grandson.
I have been observing the home school movement since 1986, and started actively teaching my first daughter in her preschool years in the very early 1990's. I've certainly learned a lot in my two decades of home schooling!
I am the author of three books about home schooling. You can read about them here: Books by Virginia.
I currently home school my five younger children, who will be in 1st through 9th grades in the 2011-2012 school year. Our oldest four daughters have graduated, and we have one daughter who will be in 11th grade for her second year in public high school.
We have been involved in home school co-ops off and on for several years. This past year, we took off a year to read through our bookshelves at home. This next year, we will return to the Providence home educators co-op, where I will teach 7th-8th grade English, as I did for four years. I love this age group since they are old enough to reason things out, but young enough to not always assume they already know everything.
Many of the articles on this blog, especially the literature and vocabulary posts, are adapted from lessons I used in my co-op classroom.
Others, including some video posts, are from workshops I have presented at the Books and Beyond literature conference in Orlando.
I'd love to hear your thoughts on this blog, and welcome any ideas for future articles or improvements.
